Osteoarthritis

One of our main current areas of research is currently joint development and osteoarthritis.

The Matrix Revolution

Cartilage is produced by cells called chondrocytes.  We are studying these tiny cells and in particular their ion channel interactions. Sadly, no one really knows what causes osteoarthritis.

Mechanisms

Chondrocytes at rest produce a certain amount of cartilage, but evidence suggests that as you walk you squish cartilage and promote formation of further cartilage.  Chondrocytes have mechanisms to translate the movement of walking into production of cartilage.  Excessive use or load may damage these cells and degrade cartilage, but normal use is reckoned to be good!

Treatments

We may be able to trick chondrocytes into making more and better cartilage, preserving joint function and reducing pain.
